Learn Chinese vocabulary by speaking it

Chinese vocabulary asks a lot at once: a character to recognise, a sound to say, and a tone to get right, all for one word. It’s easy to collect hundreds of words you can read but never say.

FluenSi puts speaking first. Save the Mandarin words you need, with pinyin, tone marks and example sentences filled in for you. Then each review asks you to use a word in a sentence of your own, out loud, and shows you how a native speaker would say it.

How FluenSi breaks down a saved word
The hard part

What makes Chinese vocabulary tricky

And how speaking your own sentences gets you past it.

Tones change the word

Mā, má, mǎ and mà are four different words. FluenSi shows pinyin with tone marks under every Chinese word and translation, reads each word aloud, and makes you say it in full sentences, so the tones come with the word, not as an afterthought.

Thousands of characters

You don't need to read characters to start: pinyin sits under every word. And because most words are built from familiar characters, like 电 in 电脑, 电话 and 电影, saving real words with examples helps the characters stick in context.

Measure words

一本书, 一杯咖啡, 一张票: every noun takes its own measure word, and using 个 for everything is a giveaway. Saying your own sentences, and seeing the corrected version, is how the right measure word becomes automatic.

Small words, big grammar

了, 过 and 的 carry tense and meaning that English puts in verb endings. They're hard to learn from word lists, and exactly what sentence feedback corrects, with a short reason for each change.

Chinese FAQ

Learning Chinese with FluenSi

Does FluenSi teach Mandarin or Cantonese?

Mandarin. Translations, word analysis and speech recognition all use Mandarin Chinese.

Does FluenSi use Simplified or Traditional characters?

Simplified characters, as used in mainland China and Singapore, with pinyin and tone marks for every word.

Can I practise speaking Chinese with FluenSi?

Yes. Every review asks you to say a new sentence with a word, out loud, using your phone's Mandarin speech recognition. Being understood is the first test of your tones, and sentence feedback then shows how natural the sentence sounded.

Is FluenSi good for HSK?

It isn't an HSK course, but it works well alongside one. Save the words from your HSK lists and practise them in spoken sentences until you can use them, not just recognise them.
